FBFF: Where do the Worn Clothes Go?

Is it me or did this week seriously fly by??  I feel like I just recuperated from a fun filled Father’s Day weekend and it’s already time for the weekend.  I’m not complaining though because I have two days where I can play catch up on both my work and relaxation!

Today’s Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday topic is all about what we do with our clothes when their wearing heyday is over. I hate wasting anything, especially clothes so I try to give away, donate, and re-purpose as much as I can!

How often do you go through your closet to purge the things you no longer wear?

As much as I would like to have some type of schedule when it comes to cleaning out my closet, that never happens! Instead, I find myself cleaning it out when a life event calls for it – gaining/losing weight, moving, and now most recently having a baby.  That’s usually when I spend a day and really go through my things and decide what I want to keep or not.

What do you do with the things you are through with?

I have a two step system when it comes to those clothes I don’t want.  My little sister and my mom get first dibs on those things that I don’t want.  I put everything in shopping bags and when they come over they get to pick through and take what they want.  What’s left over gets donated to my local Goodwill or Salvation Army.  I never throw away anything.

Have you ever sold on consignment or through online boutiques? What has your experience been like?

I’ve only sold one thing and it wasn’t even a dress of mine.  It was a bridesmaid dress that one my girls couldn’t fit in and that I couldn’t return.  I sold it on Ebay and luckily got full price on it.  It was a super easy process, though I wasn’t crazy about having to go down to the post office and send it off.

More and more people are concerned about the fast rotation of fashion and how that is filling our landfills. What are you doing to decrease your clothing trash pile?

One of the many things that blogging has taught me is how to be creative with the clothes you already have and go after versatile pieces.  That’s what I go for when I shop for clothes – can it be worn at least two different ways and does it go with something I already have in my closet?  I try to keep an inventory on those things I already have and when I go shopping I stay focused on what I walked into the store for.

What’s been your favorite/best score from a thrift store or consignment shop?

Wow, there are so many!  I would have to say my favorite  piece from a thrift store I’ve bought was this blazer I bought at Goodwill last year in Tampa.  I absolutely loved the material and the tailoring.  It definitely made me a believer in thrift store shopping for real!

What about you?  What do you with your clothes once they’ve past their prime?

Friend Friday: Blogging Community

Whoohooo!! It’s Friday and I’m pretty excited about today’s FBFF topic.  It’s all about blogging communities and what role they play (and are supposed to play) in the blogosphere.  I started thinking about this when I read this article on IFB about the decline of interaction in comments on blogs despite no loss in readership.  I thought it was something that was just happening to me, especially with everything going on in my personal life.  I think the same goes for blogging communities as well, including the FBFF community.  I was a part of the group in the early stages and one thing I loved (and missed!) were the informational conversations and discussions we would have amongst each other via our blogs, twitter, and the early days of the Google group.  We tackled issues like sizing, blogger jealousy, buying knock offs- you name it!  I loved it, I thrived on it.  It always kept me thinking and improving my writing and blog.

So what happened to our blogging communities and our interactions amongst our peers?  That’s what today’s questions are all about!

What blogging communities do you belong to?

I belong to Independent Fashion Bloggers, and Friend Beauty and Fashion Friday.  I also belonged to Full Time Fabulous for awhile.

What do you think the roll of community is in blogging?

I think a community is supposed to be a place where bloggers can come together and talk.  Talk about any issues we’re having and pick the brains of those who can help us.  Talk about any hot issues that are going on in industry and the fashion/beauty blogosphere.  Talk about the latest trends.  It’s supposed to be a place where we can come together and talk with other people that”get” what we do.  It is a place for me where I can talk about blogging, get excited, and try out new ideas, and get feedback.

Blog comments, twitter interactions and meaningful Facebook threads have decreased in the last several months. What are your thoughts on why that is?

One reason I think this has happened is the sprouting up of new mediums that we can use to promote our blogs – like Pinterest and Instagram.  They are our new shiny toys and the time that I think we could be spending on intereacting we’re using to pin and take photos.  I don’t think they are bad social tools (I use both of them!).  I just think it’s another thing to add to our blogging plates and we simply may not have enough time to interact like we used to.

Another reason I think is just the rising popularity of blogging.  I’ve noticed a huge surge in new bloggers from the time I started three years ago to now and it’s amazing!  Who can halfway blame them, with the rise of bloggers in commercials and magazine spreads.  At the same time, you have so many new people in the mix and many of them may not understand just how important it is to interact, comment, and get involved in meaningful conversations.  Many of them are more concerned with getting their names out there – hence the many (too many) threads on forums like IFB and FBFF that are just about promoting giveaways and “follow me” posts.  Honestly, it’s this flood of these type of posts that has pushed me away from getting on these forums.  I get annoyed because it seems they don’t understand that growing your blog isn’t about always promoting yourself.  Getting involved in the community and being an active and contributing member will help you grow your blog.

How do you cultivate community around your blog?

I try to get back to talking and writing about things that I can spark conversation.  Whether it’s tackling the concept of body image or just asking what’s in your beauty bag, I want to give my readers a chance to comment and share their thoughts.  I still  comment on other people’s blogs and make sure they are as meaningful and thoughtful as I can.

If you could make one resolution to be a better community member what would it be?

To get involved again like I used to and do my part to get it back to the community I used to know and I love.  Like I said before, I’ve become disenchanted with the communities I belonged to and maybe if people like me who miss those conversations we used to have start talking again, we can get it back to the place that it needs to be.

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this!  What is a blogging community to you?  What do you think has led to the decline in blogger interaction?

FBFF: Let’s Get Technical

Canon Rebel DSLR

Yes I know!  It’s been awhile since I’ve done Friend Friday!  I really miss doing it and I’m thinking with the change to once a month, it will definitely be easier for me to keep up!

This week, we’re talking about technology and the tools we use to blog.  My experience as a blogger has taught me that everything is not for everyone and at the end of the day you have to use those tools and programs that will enhance your blog, not because it’s the latest thing to do.  So with that in mind, onto the questions!

What are the tools you use to blog?

Hardware:

  • Gateway Laptop
  • Canon Rebel T3 camera
  • Full size Tri-pod
  • Kodak camera for video
  • Cell Phone – Samsung Vibrant (which I really need to upgrade!)
  • Kindle Fire for reading books on blogging and writing (like this one)

Software and Online Programs:

  • WordPress
  • Microsoft Office – Word, Powerpoint, Outlook
  • Picnik for photo editing (and it’s going away soon!  What am I going to do?? :( )
  • Google Mail for blog email
  • Google Reader

Social Media

What technology item is on your wish-list?

Now that I have the camera I’ve wanted ever since I started blogging, next on my wishlist is a toss up between a new lens or an Ipad so I can blog and work more on the go.  The new lens may win only because my husband wants one too! LOL

Through the barrage of posts, tweets, pics, poses, messages, etc… how do you avoid becoming a slave to the constant infiltration of information?

I simply turn everything off!  That is the only way I can do it and save my sanity.  These past two weeks my social media and blogging activities I usually do had to be put on the back burner due to my Real Life taking center stage and it’s times like that when it feels pretty good to just tune out, leave the phone in a far room and my laptop tucked away in my office. It put things into perspective and reminds me that my family are more important than staying up to date with the latest everything!

What blogging tools do you use?

Friend Friday: Starting To Look A Lot Like Christmas

Santa Hats

Christmas 2008

Don’t ask me where the time went but seriously, I just put my tree up a few days ago! LOL  I’m usually on the ball with that but it’s all good.  It’s Christmas at MJ’s house now so I’m in the right headspace to answer these FBFF form questions about the holidays! (Yeah we’re taking it old school today!)

No holiday party is complete without: Christmas music of course!

My favorite Christmas song/album:   My favorite Christmas songs are Santa Claus is Coming to Town by the Jackson Five, All I want for Christmas by Mariah Carey, and The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole.  I think I’m going to put those songs on right now…

My favorite seasonal recipe: I’m not much of a cook but my grandmother’s candied yams are crazy awesome and we only eat it around this time of year.

The perfect New Year’s Eve outfit includes:   A sparkly pair of pumps.  I’m seriously obsessed with them after getting my first pair.

At the parties, I’ll be drinking: Champagne for sure.  No time like this time of year to get my grown girl on.

Eggnog, good or bad?  Eggnog is good but with a little bit of nutmeg and a splash of dark rum, it’s awesome!

Did you ever take pictures on Santa’s lap at the mall? As a kid I did every year and once in college. So much fun!

Gingerbread Latte or Peppermint Mocha:  Neither.  I’m an Eggnog Latte and Pumpkin Coffee kinda girl.

Worst gift I ever got: You know, I’ve never really received a bad gift.  I’m lucky to have very attentive people around me (or people who just flat out ask me what I want, either way it works!)

Best gift I ever received: My engagement ring from my husband.  Nothing can beat that gift! J

My family has this weird tradition: My siblings and I always rock our Santa hats and reindeer ears every year.  It’s great when you can be goofy with the people you love!

My best bargain find for a gift this year:  Seriously, I got great deals on all of my gifts this year.  Can’t say what they are though (because my peeps read the blog)

If I could only buy all my gifts from one place, I’d shop at: Tiffany’s.  I’m a big fan of the “buy one for them and one for me” rule!

Rudolph the Red-nose Reindeer or Frosty the Snowman:  I like Rudolph!  He’s a cutie!

My favorite holiday memory:  When I got engaged two days after Christmas.  He was called to tell me he couldn’t get anything for Christmas and a whole bunch of other things that he knew would make me angry.  So we didn’t talk the entire day (because I was peeved!) and when he came by to see me empty handed I was through!  I was so upset, I didn’t realize when he got on one knee and pulled my ring out of his pocket (laughing at me the entire time, mind you!)

My favorite Christmas movie:  March of the Wooden Soldiers is my all time favorite!  Home Alone comes in close second.

The best part about holiday decorations is: The tree!  It’s the star of the show.

Rip off the wrapping paper or neatly pull off the tape:   Oh I’m a neat freak when it comes to unwrapping.  I fold the scraps up and everything!

Miracle on 34th Street or It’s a Wonderful Life:   Miracle on 34th Street for sure.

It doesn’t feel like the holiday season until: I put my Christmas tree up.  That’s when it sinks in for sure!

All I want for Christmas is:  To have my family over at my new home.

Christmas Tree

My Christmas Tree 2011. Next year I'm upgrading! :)

What are your favorites of this holiday season?

Friend Friday: What I’m Thankful For…

As we always do on FBFF around this time is talk about the things we are thankful for.  This couldn’t come at a better time for me.  It forces me to take a time out and focus on all the positive things that I have going on in my life.  It’s so easy to get caught up in the grind with that tunnel vision where the only thing you see are the goals you’ve set for yourself.  There’s nothing wrong with being focused but like I said in my last outfit post, you have to enjoy the journey and be thankful for what you have already.  I’ve had some major hurdles to overcome this week alone and it honestly shook my foundation a little bit.  So I’m really thankful for blogging memes like this one that make me pause, smile, and be grateful.

I’m thankful for:

MJ Fierce Beauty and Fashion

Having a husband that knows how to cook (and loves to do it!).  That in itself is a non-culinary girl’s dream.  No matter what kind of day I’m having, it’s wonderful to come home to an awesome meal at the end of my day.

My jeggings.  Lord knows I’ve been having a hard time maintaining my weight lately and these babies proved to be very necessary not only for my closet but the impending holidays.  Thank you elastic waist! :)

White T-Shirt

My new home.  I literally walk around my house all the time and just thank the Man above for blessing my husband and I with such a wonderful place.  It was worth all the headaches and penny pinching that we had to do and I appreciate it every time I walk through my front door.  It also taught me that many times you have to go through some crazy stuff to get what you want and in the end all of it was worth it.

Pandora.  I need music to get me through my days and it always knows the right things to play for me.  Thank you Pandora!

My mom’s thrift store skills.  When it comes to home décor, my mom has my tastes down to a science and she’s scored so many awesome things for me (like my tripod for $5!) at garage sales and thrift stores it’s insane!

I just had a piece of this Chocolate Raspberry Truffle cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory last week. O.M.G.... All kinds of awesome! (Photo courtesy of: Cheesecake Factory)

Cheesecake.  Whoever invented it should get the Nobel Prize. It’s always brings peace into my world.

My Blogging girls.  I never would’ve thought that this space would help meet and become friends with such kind, talented, and just plain awesome ladies around! (Ya’ll know you who you are!)

For the extra storage in my bathroom.  My beauty product collection is growing by the second and it will take awhile before it starts overflowing into my bedroom like it did at my last place!

Dreams.  They keep us going even when we’re in the darkest of times.  It knows how to pull us out of a pity party and talk us out of giving up.  I will forever be grateful for those.

What are some of the things you’re thankful for?
