Beauty Blast: Moroccanoil Volumizing Hair Collection

Moroccanoil

I love oils and my hair loves them – it seals in the moisture my hair needs without weighing it down like heavy butters tend to do.  Hot oil treatments help me combat dryness while adding them to conditioners and styling creams amp up their moisture power.  I’ve never gotten my hands on Moroccanoil though so when they reached out to me to review their Volumizing Hair Collection I jumped at the chance. It came in a gorgeous beauty bag that I’m absolutely in love with!  As a matter of fact, I used it to pack my beauty stuff on my latest road trip.  Since I talked about this collection last month on Facebook, I’ve been using the Shampoo and Moroccanoil Treatment. Overall, I wasn’t as psyched about it as I thought I would be.

Volumizing Shampoo ($24)

Formulated to cleanse, detangle, and give hair the body it needs, this shampoo is free of all those parabens, sulfates, and phosphates we’re not crazy about. It also has argan oil and promises to leave hair manageable and shiny.   While I have no issues with volume, it did a great job getting my hair clean and didn’t leave my hair feeling stripped and dry after rinsing it out.   I didn’t notice a big difference on the detangling side nor on the shine factor.  It also didn’t leave my hair as soft as my current fav which was a bit of a letdown too.

Moroccanoil Treatment ($43)

This oil has ingredients like fatty acids, Omega-3 oils, and vitamins for shine and antioxidants to keep your hair protected.  It can be used as conditioning, styling, and finishing treatment and rest assured your girl used it as all three!  I was the most excited about this one, taking to it with both hands!  I used to seal in my moisturizer on wash days, as styling oil when fluffing my hair out in the morning, as well as a conditioner for my hair right before bed.  It smells amazing and it left my hair soft and moisturized.  It was a great alternative to my olive oil.  However, it performed just as well as my olive oil does and, because I have a lot of hair, I have to use a lot of it to get it all. As a result it didn’t last long (I’m savoring the last drops after using it for about a month).

The collection also came with a Volumizing Mousse.  Because I don’t use mousse, I had a friend of mine try it out and so far she loves it!

Beauty Inspiration for a Rainy Day

Man I am sooo over this rain!  I understand it’s rainy season and all but this is crazy!  For two weeks know, we’ve been getting hit with not just rain but torrential downpours every day.  The past few were the worst because we caught the rain bands of Tropical Storm Andrea that produced a tornado about 30 minutes west of me.  Yeah, craziness! So I’ve basically been stuck in the house (only brave enough to venture only a few minutes away from home) looking at these grey skies.

Yeah…not fun.

So to brighten my Friday (and hopefully brighten yours!) I’m bringing in my buddy Pinterest to give out a healthy dose of beauty inspiration.  Ya’ll know makeup and hair makes me happy! :)

Six Things to Have in your Make up Bag This Summer

Happy Memorial Day!

It’s the official kick off of the summer season (though here in Florida it’s been summer for quite awhile now!)   If you’re like me, you’re breaking out the summer clothes and changing up our makeup bags.  In the Spring I was still able to get away with using some of my winter products but now, definitely not!  It’s been in the high 80′s this entire weekend and with a lineup of BBQ’s, birthday parties, and family get-togethers in the next few months I want to look put together without melting! So here are six products that I’m putting in my makeup bag this summer.

Smashbox

Tinted Moisturizer with SPF protection

Having your foundation melt off your face is so not cute, so mine gets put away.  In it’s place is a tinted moisturizer with SPF.  My face stays moisturized, I have color coverage, and my skin is protected.

Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof Mascara

Sweat can equal raccoon eyes, so I’d rather skip that and make sure my mascara stays put.  I can swipe it on and forget about it!

Eyeshadow

Cream Eyeshadow

I can get the intense color I want without having it fade away after an hour outside.  Waterproof ones get an extra thumbs up from me!

Bronzer

Bronzer

I admit, I was never much of a bronzer type of girl, but after last Friday’s post, I’m becoming a believer.  It gives my skin a subtle shimmer that I like and paired with some concealer, I can get the same coverage I have with foundation.

Red Lipstick

Bright Lip Color

Okay, this never really leaves the makeup bag but the summer does give me an excuse to buy a new one!  When I’m really pressed for time all I need is a bold colored lipstick to take my look from ordinary to glam in less than five minutes!

Eyeliner

Colored Liner

After doing this Beauty Look of the Day, I jumped on the colored liner bandwagon. I loved how I could just rock a colored liner all by itself.  So, I am on the hunt for some more fun colors to add to my collection!

Going from Day to Night with Mary Kay

The summer season is kicking off this weekend and this the time to start simplifying our beauty routines. We trade in all of our heavy foundations and powders for light bronzers and tinted moisturizers.    It’s also a time to have fun with color, whether it’s bright eyes or bold lips.  So how can we rock these beauty trends without spending a ton of time (and products)?

This is where my friends from Mary Kay come in. Marissa Nemes, Mary Kay’s Glam Squad Celebrity Makeup Artist, gave me some great tips on getting the perfect summer look.  Inspired by the runways of this past Spring’s Fashion Week, she focuses on dewy skin and long lashes for a natural daytime look, adding scarlet red lip color that takes the look straight into evening.  Armed with her product recommendations (and a few tweaks of my own), I put her tips to the test.

Daytime Look

Mary Kay Makeup

Marissa Says:

  • Create a beautiful canvas by highlighting and lightly concealing the under eye area with the Mary Kay Facial Highlighting Pen
  • Define and contour the face using Mary Kay Mineral Bronzer in Canyon Gold  then  illuminate the highest plains of the face by applying Mary Kay Mineral Highlighting Powder in Pink Stardust to the cheekbones, bridge of nose, forehead and chin
  • For beautiful, angelic lashes, use an eyelash curler and then apply Mary Kay Lash Love Mascara in a zig-zag motion to evenly coat every lash
  • Finally, spritz on Mary Kay Makeup Finishing Spray to keep makeup in place and provide a dewy finish

My Thoughts

  • I really wanted to use the highlighting pen but the sample I had wasn’t a color match for my skin.  So I improvised with my own concealer, not only concentrating under the eyes but my eye lids and nose as well.  It’s the area of my face that’s the darkest and just doing that instantly brightened up my face.
  • I find that my face doesn’t need too much contouring, adding a little of the bronzer right under my cheek bones and on the sides of my nose.  I liked the subtle sparkle it gave my skin as well as evening it out.  Normally I would need foundation and press powder for that!  As for the highlighting powder, also too light for my skin so I had to skip that.
  • All I needed was the Mascara to get the long lashes her look called for. I loved the tiny brush because it picked up every lash.
  • The finishing spray felt light and dried up quickly, helping my makeup stay put.  I didn’t see much of a dewy finish though.
  • I also needed a lip color because I can’t just step out of the house without it!  To keep with the natural look  I had going on, I put on Mary Kay’s Downtown Brown.  It’s a nice brown color with a touch of shimmer.
Night Time Look

Mary Kay Makeup

Marissa Says:

  • Touch up your daytime look, if necessary, and re-illuminate the highest plains of the face using Mineral Highlighting Powder in Pink Stardust
  • Apply two more coats of Mary Kay Lash Love Mascara to lashes to build volume
  • Sweep Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipstick in Sizzling Red on lips for a gorgeous bold pout with subtle shine
  • Reapply Mary Kay Makeup Finishing Spray to freshen up skin!

My Thoughts

  • I kept my look as is, not needing to reapply the bronzer, though I did add one more coat of mascara.
  • The lipstick is a-mazing!  The packaging is sleek and modern, unlike any I’ve seen.  The lipstick itself goes on soft and smooth with great pigmentation.  The color is the perfect red, not too bright or too deep that I couldn’t wear it during the day if I wanted to.

Marissa tips were great and I learned that just some concealer and bronzer can give me the same results as my tinted moisturizer and powder.  Definitely saves me time and keeps my skin light in the sweltering heat.  Product wise, the mascara and the lipstick were by far my favorites.  I can see them both becoming a part of my beauty routine this summer!

Are you a fan of Mary Kay?  What are your favorite products?

Fierce Natural Hair: All Hail the Afro

One of the first goals I had when I decided to stop relaxing my hair was to have big and bold hair.  I wanted people to see my hair before they saw me!  I could never achieve that before and when I was finally able to rock an afro, you couldn’t tell me nothin’!  I don’t know what it is, but when I have my hair all fro’d out I feel free, rebellious, and extra confident.  It could be the historical significance of the Afro that long stood against conforming to discriminatory norms.  In a lot of ways that still applies -the  natural hair trend  is breaking down impossible industry images of what beauty is.  I’m all for breaking down those walls and letting women celebrate who they are instead of wasting their time trying to be something they can’t.

So in celebration of the movement against industry ideals, we are paying tribute to the fro. (Right on!)
