Get Wide-Awake Lashes With Avon’s Big and Daring Mascara

Some days call for big, bold lashes. A hot date, holiday parties, or a girl’s night may come to mind. For me, however, it’s those times when sleep doesn’t come easy.

The blog’s been quiet this for the past week because my darling daughter decides to have a late night  party – every night….for the past week. Now that my freelancing life has taken me out of my home office into an actual one, looking like a person all day everyday is a priority.

So how do I look like I’m wide awake and on the ball when I haven’t slept in a week?

Enter Avon’s Big and Daring Mascara.

The newest mascara from Avon promises 5X the explosive volume of regular mascara with a plumping complex and a curved wire brush. These multi-level bristles catch every single lash, coating them with a crème gel formula that brings them out for the world to see. The volume is amazing, my lashes getting great length and curl without a flake or a clump in sight. With one swipe my eyes are instantly brightened as if I had a full eight hours of sleep (I seriously don’t know what that looks like!). The best part? My lashes stayed that way – all day, so if I had evening plans that didn’t include fighting with a toddler, I wouldn’t have to do any kind of touch ups.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been this impressed with mascara that does exactly what it says it will do. Oh, and did I mention it’s only $9? The only thing that can beat that is a good nights sleep.

Have you tried Avon’s new mascara? Whatcha think?

6 Makeup Must-Haves for the Holiday Season

Happy After Turkey Day!

Okay, it’s more like a few days after Thanksgiving but my brain is still on turkey overload!  Between visiting family with a clingy toddler, venturing out to do Black Friday shopping, and working off all awesome food I pigged out on, December crept up on me!  That means a lot more festivities to go to (and a lot more yummy food!)  We ladies have to be prepared on the beauty front.  So today I’m bringing you six beauty products you should have on deck to get you through this party season looking your very best! Promise. ;)

 Makeup Products

TooFaced Smoky Eye Palette

I’ve had this set for like ever because it’s my go-to for a fancy night out.  The shadows have a deep and rich pigment that lasts all night without creasing or fading.  With six shades to choose from you can create anything from a shimmery day look to a sultry smoky eye. And oh, the three tutorial cards are super handy too!

CoverGirl LipPerfection in Hot or Seduce

A bold red lip never goes out of style and is perfect for the holidays.  Plus it’s super easy to pull off with the right lipstick, like this one from CoverGirl.  It delivers rich color, has great staying power, and moisturizes your lips while you dance the night away!

Rimmel London Gel Eyeliner*

What better way to rock your red lips than with a great cat eye.  This eyeliner is perfect for that, gliding on smooth with an easy applicator and a waterproof formula that’ll keep it going strong no matter the weather. It’s rich color adds instant drama to your eyes, whether you wear it alone or with a sexy smoky eye.

Avon Super Extend Mascara*

During the holidays we do it big over here and your lashes are no exception. Even if I can’t manage to wear much eye makeup, mascara is a must because it instantly opens up your eyes.  I love this one from Avon because those tiny bristles give you the volume you need with just one coat (and sans clumping).

Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Primer*

I don’t know about you, but my family loves to party.  We’ll start at 5, 6 pm and go on until the wee hours of the morning taking pictures the entire time.  For those all nighters, a primer is a must to keep my entire look from sliding off my face!  This one from Smashbox is awesome because it creates a smooth surface for the rest of my makeup and keeps my skin hydrated.

Neutrogena Makeup Wipes

After a long night of partying hard the last thing you want to do is wash all that makeup off your face.  That’s why these babies are my saving grace!  They do a great job at getting all of my makeup off so I can crawl into bed a whole lot faster!

What are your makeup must haves for the holidays?

Beauty Blast: Getting Ombre Eyes with Avon

You guys already know I’m a big fan of Avon, having the opportunity to try out their best beauty products.  One thing I haven’t taken for a test drive in a long while is their eyeshadow, one of my favorite type of cosmetic. Today I had my chance, getting inspired by their True Color Eyeshadow Single in Midnight Sparkler.  When I looked on the back of the small compact I saw the word “ombre” at the end of the product description and knew instantly I wanted that effect on my eyes.  This color was the perfect place to start, a dark yet sparkly navy blue shade that has a soft finish.  I scooped up two lighter blue shadows to complete the look, starting off dark at the lash line and lightening it up by the time you reach the brow bone.  The Avon Super Shock Gel Eye Liner pencil in black was the perfect finish, giving a smooth, medium sized line along my upper lash line.  It’s really easy to use and I can already see myself wearing this alone, creating a great cat eye!  I also had a chance to use their lip crayon in Sweetly Pink.  While the color gave me a subtlepink tint I found it to be a little drying, so that one was a bit of a letdown.  Next time I’ll opt for a nude gloss.

  • Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer
  • Mally Beauty Cancellation Conditioning Concealer*
  • CoverGirl Press Powder in Tawny

  • With a pencil brush, I applied Midnight Sparkler* from the lash line to the middle of my eyelids.
  • With my small, flat brush I applied the dark blue shadow from my CoverGirl Eye Enhancer’s Trio in Blazing Blues.  I started from the middle of the lid and blended out over the crease.
  • From that same palette, I swept the lightest blue shade from the creases to just below my eyebrow arches.
  • Once all the shadows were on, I used my finger to carefully blend everything in.
  • I lined my upper lash lines with the Avon Gel Eye Liner Pencil* and coated my lashes with Avon’s Super Extend Infinite Mascara*.

Avon Ultra Color Lip Crayon in Sweetly Pink*

Makeup Tips

I’m rocking my usual wash and go, using Organix Moroccan Argan Crème Shampoo and Tresemme Naturals Curl Hydration conditioner.  I’m totally in love with both of these products and a review will be coming real soon.  To cut down on drying time, I blasted my hair with blow dryer, gently tugging at my curls to stretch them a little bit.  My hair is getting thicker and it’s taking more than a day to dry on it’s own.  When I go to bed with wet hair, my curls get all limp and lazy so my ConAir has been getting a lot more play these days!

Beauty Look of the Day: Purple Supernova

Fall Beauty Trends

While I may not always be on board with every fashion trend that comes along, I’m really feeling this Fall’s beauty trends.  I guess it’s because almost everyone can pull them off and purple eyeshadow is no exception!  It’s one of my favorite colors to play with so it’s only right I kick off this month’s BLOTD with a purple eye look.  One of the first products I grabbed was an old favorite of mine – Meteor-Eyes Baked Glitter Eyeshadow in Supernova from Hard Candy.  The color is so rich for a drugstore brand, with fun specks of purple glitter.  I also love the fact that you can use a wet brush to get an even deeper pigment and really see those light purple specks.  Pairing it with my summer time fave Painted Purple from Maybelline and another fall color silver, I’m finally settling into this Fall season business!

Makeup Products

  • Mary Kay Medium Coverage Liquid Foundation
  • Revlon PhotoReady Concealer
  • Avon Cream Blush in Pink Melon*

  • With a small, stiff angled paint brush, I applied Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hr Eyeshadow in Painted Purple from the outer crease to the middle of the lid.
  • From the inner crease to the middle of the lid, I used Silver from the TooFaced Smoky Eye Palette with a pencil brush.  With my finger I blended it over the purple shade
  • Hard Candy’s Baked Glitter Eyeshadow in Supernova* went in the creases blending it out a tad into the brow bone with a small flat brush.
  • On the brow bone I swept Amethyst from Smashbox’s Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio in Telephoto* with a blending brush.
  • I lined the upper lash line with Avon’s Glittersticks* in Black
  • Finished up with NYC Big Bold Mascara in Black.  Been awhile since I used this one!

I wanted something light and pink so I went with Avon’s Totally Kissable Lipstick in Lovey Dovey*.  I admit, I’m not totally sold on the color but it was the only thing I had in my crazy stash that was the closest to what I was looking for.  (looks like I need to go shopping!)

Natural Hair

Remember last time I told you ladies I was having some moisture issues with the back of my hair?  Well so far, the only thing that’s alleviating this problem is doing twist outs.  Now you know I’m not a big fan of it on my hair simply because I don’t get the fullness I love with a Wash N Go.  My hair is so fine.  But the dryness and coarseness was driving me nuts so last week I did a bantu knot it, thinking that curling the twists would give me some volume.  It came out okay but I did the knots too small and applied too much holding product.  Today I just did a twist out, using a lot less product and making bigger twists (about 11 in all).

  • After washing and conditioning my hair with my favorite Organix products, I wrapped my hair in a T-shirt and let it soak up all that water for a good hour.
  • Once I took my hair down it was 80% dry, really soft, and stretched.  I applied Cantu’s Leave In Conditioning Cream and followed up with Olive Oil to seal in the moisture.
  • For each twist I used Cantu’s Twist and Lock Gel (which is more of a cream than a gel but has great hold!), combing the product through before twisting.
  • After sleeping with a satin cap overnight it was time to take them down.  I applied Oil Moisture Restore Weightless Oil on each twist before unraveling them.
  • Once they were all down I did a lot of fluffing and carefully separating the twists.  Still not happy with it, I pinned back the sides with clips, letting the front do it’s thing!

If I can get more volume as the days go on, then I wouldn’t mind doing this style more often!

What Fall beauty trend do you look forward to wearing?

Pinterest Makeup Inspiration: Dark Eyes and Pink Lipstick

Makeup Tips

Pinterest has to be one of my favorite places to get inspired.  Whenever I’m stuck in a fashion rut or need ideas for blog posts, I go to my boards or just pin away until my creativity kicks back in.  While I was pinning from my phone one night (the Android app is genius!) I got an idea.  I could  take the looks I’ve pinned to my Makeup Inspiration Board and try to do them myself.  Not only do a get to challenge my PJ brain, I get to breathe new life into my Beauty posts.

One trend I noticed a lot on my makeup board was dark eye looks and soft lipstick colors.  I rarely go the dark shadow route and when I do I usually fall back on the same look.  So I took one of my favorite pins and got to work on making it my own.  I was little skeptical at first (OMG, this look calls for liner on the lower lash line!  I can never get it right!) but I hung in there and took my time.

The end result – I’m very pleased!  It’s a whole different look for me and ya’ll my lower liner does not look crazy! #Winning

Makeup Ideas

  • My DIY Tinted Moisturizer : Mix in a few drops of my liquid foundation into my daily moisturizer from Neutrogena
  • Revlon PhotoReady Concealer in under my eyes
  • CoverGirl concealer on my lids and brow bone to lighten them up
  • CoverGirl press powder

  • I went to my TooFaced Smokey Eye Palette for this one, using the colors from their Classic Smoke look.
  • With a pencil brush I applied Silver in the inner creases for a little brightness before layering on the dark shadow
  • I filled in the rest of my lid with ScandalEyes eyeshadow stick* in BlackMail.  I used my finger to blend the across the lid
  • I went over my lid with Black Suede for more depth of color
  • To keep my brow bone nice and neutral I swept Nude from Smashbox Shades of Fame Palette* and pressed in a little bit of Bliss under the arch of my eyebrow for a little brightness.
  • Now here comes the liner!  Using Rimmel London’s Waterproof Gel Eyeliner* I lined my upper and lower lash lines all the way from the inner crease to the outer crease giving myself a little wing action.
  • With a pencil brush I went back to Black Suede and went over my lower lash line to take away some of the shine the liner was giving me
  • Finished off with two coats of ScandalEyes Show Off Mascara in black on my upper and lower lashes

Avon Glazewear Lip Gloss* in Mauve Movement

My hair is still straight from blowing it out last Saturday (tutorial to come, I promise!)  I went from some side sweep action to imitate the picture, using a little bit of Soft and Beautiful’s Lite Moisturizer for shine.

Natural Hair

After taking pictures for this post, I pushed my hair back and threw on a headband to get it out of my face and I realized I liked my hair better this way.  It shows off the eyes much better.
