Beauty Look of the Day: Earthy Tones

African American beauty

It’s so easy to fall into a beauty rut – using the same products, colors, and combinations over and over again.  They’re tried and true, you know what you’re gonna get, and you don’t have to think about it.  Staying true to my New Year’s Resolutions, I’m trying to amp things up in the style department.  After rocking my first colorblocking shirt, I wanted an equally new makeup look to go with it.  Bright, earthy  colors was what I wanted to use so I dug through my makeup stash and found some colors I hadn’t used in quite awhile!

Eyes:

  • To give my eye color a little lift, I applied NYX Eyeshadow Base in pearl.  It gives any eyeshadow you use a little more depth of color with a touch of shimmer.
  • Then I went ot the only orange shadow I had, also from NYX in Hot Orange.  I hardly use it because it didn’t give me the deep color I wanted (it looks  so promising in the packaging)  I thought that the base would amp it up but sadly it didn’t.  So I had to go over it with Smashbox’s Sherbert* for more highlighting action.
  • I stayed in the Smashbox palette *and applied Honey into the creases and bleneded out into the browbone.
  • For the outer creases I used dark Cocoa.
  • I finished up with Neutrogena’s mascara* in black.

Lips

Maybelline Lipstick in Copper Charm.  I had to be careful putting this on.  The color is really bright for my skin tone and if I put too much on I would look totally crazy!

Natural Hair

Hair

Yeah, I was totally lazy on this one. I dunno, I’m getting a little uninspired with my hair these days.  I’m trying to find a style that’s new, cute, and doesn’t require hours in front of the mirror.   Anyways,  I did my standard puff, spritzing my curls with Coconut Curling Milk* diluted with water and my Curling Souflee for shine and hold.  Ladies I’m all open for hair suggestions! :)

Beauty Storage Ideas

If you’re a beauty junkie like me you know that there comes a point where your stash becomes an unsightly mess!  When your beauty product collection is crazy you can’t fully appreciate all the wonderful stuff you have.  I know I came across some old gems of mine lately and it was only because I got tired of using the same old products and had the time to go through the many plastic drawers and makeup bags I had in my bathroom.  I attempted to organize my stuff awhile back but I still can’t see all that I have at a glance.  While my makeup only requires me to rifle around in my drawers for a few minutes, my hair stuff is another story!  I can’t see everything I have under my sink and those products I do use just create unnecessary clutter on my bathroom counter (and clutter drives me in-sane!)  So I’m on a mission to find a creative, and practical way to store my beauty collection and you won’t believe some of the cool ideas I found!

Another option for the bathroom counter.  It’s like having your own personal beauty display.

Easy solution for the inside of your medicine cabinet.  I even like the toothbrushes there too.

Beauty Blast: Jergens Dry Skin Moisturizer

Jergens Lotion

Winter weather can wreck havoc on your skin.  Even down here, we’ve been having more cold snaps than usual and since having a baby, my skin has become even drier.  So I’m always looking for a lotion that gives me the moisture my skin needs. My days can be frantic and downright crazy sometimes so I want my skin to be smooth and soft all day.  When the folks over at Jergens asked me to give their Daily Moisture Dry Skin Moisturizer for a test drive, I was excited!  I’m a big fan of Jergens, a skincare brand that has graced my bathroom countertop a time or too.  With silk proteins and a Citrus Extract blend of lemon, grapefruit, and pineapple juices it promises to hydrate skin and keep it looking smooth and silky all day.

After using it for about two weeks, making sure I target my trouble spots like my legs and feet, I really like it!  The lotion goes on easy and absorbs into my skin rather quickly.  That’s important because who wants their skin to feel greasy after putting on lotion!  My skin looks great, feels smooth and it really does last all day.  The fragrance is gender neutral – meaning that it doesn’t smell fruity or girly so your guy will have no qualms using it!  I would like to see Jergens come out with a sweet smelling lotion though ( I don’t like sharing my skincare stash sometimes!)

Have you used Jergens?  Which one of their lotions do you like?

Beauty Look of the Day: Brown Sparkle

Makeup

Though I love experimenting with every color eye shadow under the sun, I do have my days where I just want a nice daytime look.  My Natural Eye Palette gets plenty of love from me so I wanted to use some of my other neutral shadows. I was heading out to a baby shower and my outfit was cute and casual, so I wanted my beauty look to be the same way.   I dug around my stash and found this sparkly brown shadow from Milani so I was excited to use it!  There’s always room for sparkle, even in the daytime!

Face:

The baby shower was outside so I didn’t want anything too heavy but would control the shine.  So I went with Avon’s Cream to Powder Foundation in Cocoa, finishing with my favorite press powder from Covergirl.

Eyes:
  1. As I mentioned before, I used Milani’s Runway Eyes in Bronze Doll as a highlight color on the lids.  It has great color and a subtle sparkle that I love.  Even you want even more depth of color, you can apply it with a wet brush.
  2. To help this gorgeous bronze color stand out, I swept Sue Devitt’s shadow in Burma, a matte chocolate shade in the creases and brow bone.
  3. I thought a black liner would be too much, so I went for Avon’s Everlasting liquid liner in dark brown.  The thin line along the upper lash line opened my eyes up even more.
  4. I finished up with Maybelline’s Colossal Volume Mascara in black.
Lips:

I wanted a natural looking gloss with a touch of shimmer, so I used Avon’s Everlasting Lip Gloss in Apple Cinnamon.

Natural Hair Updo

My little girl totally dictated this hair style.  She is at the stage where she wants to reach up and grab everything, including my hair so it gets put up a lot more often.  I didn’t want to do my standard puff, so I gave myself a little mini bump in the front.  I spritzed my hair with water and used Shea Moisture’s Curling Souffle for hold and shine. And oh, can I just say that the dreaded postpartum hair shedding has stopped! Halleluiah!   I would have a Chia pet after every hair wash. So gross!  My thinning edges are starting to grow in, thanks to applying a little caster oil after washing my hair.  Works wonders I tell you!

The Best Beauty Looks on the Oscar’s Red Carpet

While I totally missed the Golden Globes, I did have a chance to watch the red carpet coverage for the Academy Awards last night.  While the fashionista in me loves looking at all the dresses and see what my favorite actresses were wearing, the beauty junkie in me just does as much oogling at the hair a.  While there were the usual updo’s and curls, there were some definite show stoppers and here are some of my favorites!

Short and Fierce

These by far were my favorite hair looks of the night.  Charlize’s pixie cut screams fierceness while Ms. Hathaways is young and whimsical.  An awesome look for both ladies!

Sleek and Elegant

A lot of actresses wore their hair down last night but these two ladies pulled this look together the best.  Reese’s curls are absolutely perfect, with plenty of elegance without trying too hard.  Jennifer always has her hair together and last night was no different.  The blunt bangs and a touch of wave was super classy (and can I just say I love her lip color?!)

Oscar Worthy Updo’s

These ladies took a relaxed approach to the updo without looking undone.  Jennifer Lawrence’s face glowed with her hair pulled all the way back.  Ms. Garner’s face was framed quite nicely with letting that wavy piece hang.
