Beauty Look of The Day: Riding Out the Last Days of Summer

Red Lipstick

For today’s look I was originally inspired by the new Wet N Wild Palette I bought the other day on a trip to Walgreens.  It’s their Photo Op Eyeshadow from the Fergie Center Stage Collection in Maldives Sky.  What first drew my eye was the circular packaging, which was a big step away from their normal rectangular palettes.  Next were the beautiful turquoise shades.  It screamed summer to me, a season I’m still reluctant to let go of.  Combined with dark purple and blue shades I could use this product well into the Fall.

I was ready to put those summer colors to work – only to be disappointed.  The pigmentation was way off, not delivering anywhere near the depth of color I saw in the compact.  I still wanted to rock these colors and  I remembered my Smashbox Shades of Fame Collection*.    I already use a lot of the neutral colors but it’s been awhile since I wore the shade Pacific, which is just as tropical blue as the name suggests.  From there, I pictured sandy beaches and Caribbean getaways, counting down the days to summer’s end!

Beauty Tips

Face

  • Mary Kay Medium Coverage Foundation
  • Revlon Photo Ready Concealer
  • CoverGirl Press Powder
  • Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color in Citrus Bloom*

Eyes

  • The shade Pacific was going to take center stage, so I pressed it all over my lids with a small flat brush
  • Using a pencil brush, I applied the dark turquoise shadow from the Wet n Wild Palette in the creases.
  • To keep the color controlled, I swept Mocha* from the Smashbox Collection in the brow bone.
  • For liner, I used Wet N Wild’s Mega Liquid Liner in black.  I applied a very thin line, staying as close to the upper lash line as possible.
  • To finish it off, I swept one coat of Avon’s Super Extend Infinite Mascara* in black.

Lips

What’s summer without my CoverGirl LipPerfection Lip Color, especially my old time favorite shade, Tempt!

Natural Hair Style for Black Women

Hair

I’ve been having a kind of love/hate relationship with my hair.  Lately the back of my hair has been feeling extra dry and coarse .  I’ve been deep conditioning every other week and even did a cowash two days ago.   I don’t know if my hair is going through changes or what but I’ve been a bit frustrated.  The shrinkage has also been kinda of crazy!  To help with that, I braided just the back last night using Organix Moisture Restore Weightless Oil.  I found that helped out a little but I’m still baffled by the difference in texture that’s going on back there.  As for the rest of my hair, it’s doing pretty good with the new moisturizer I’m using.  On that same Walgreens shopping trip, I bought Motions Hydrate My Curls Pudding.  It’s light, doesn’t leave my hair greasy, and keeps my hair moisturized for most of the day.

How are you spending these last days of summer?

How to Create a Natural Beauty Look in 10 Minutes or Less

As I sit and watch my favorite Real Housewives shows throughout the week it’s amazing to see these women dressed to the nines and their makeup on point every day.  Lord knows if I could have my makeup done like on a daily basis it would be awesome!  But life isn’t TV, and with all the running around we ladies do wearing makeup could be the last thing on the list.  What I hear from a lot of my friends is they just don’t have the time!  Granted, you can’t rock a Smokey eye or false lashes every day but you can have a natural beauty look where you can at least look like you have it all together.  With the right products you can totally pull it off in 10 minutes or less (promise!).

Makeup Tips

What you need:

  • Tinted Moisturizer or BB Cream
  • Concealer
  • Press Powder (if you have oily skin)
  • Light Neutral Shadow like:
    • Smashbox Bliss or Nude
    • TooFaced Heaven
  • Eyeliner pencil in black
  • Black Mascara
  • Shimmery Lip Gloss
  1.  Apply your tinted moisturizer or BB Cream after cleansing.  They moisturize your skin while giving it the color coverage it needs.
  2. If you have dark under eye circles (like me!) or other blemishes, cover them up with a little concealer.  A few pats with your ring finger are all you need.
  3. If you have oily skin, dab on a little press powder in your oily zones.  Mine are my nose and cheeks.
  4. Sweep your neutral shadow of choice all over your lids and brow bone.  It’s amazing how they brighten up those eyes!
  5. Line your upper lash line with your black eyeliner.  I like pencils because they’re easy to use when you’re in a hurry.
  6. Apply a coat of mascara
  7. Finish off with a few swipes of your lip gloss and you’re done!

Beauty Look of the Day: The Bright Lips Have It!

Makeup Tips

When I thought of what I wanted to do for today’s Beauty Look, the first thing that came to mind was bright lipstick!  I haven’t rocked it in awhile, having too much fun with  eye makeup.  After looking through my newly organized makeup drawers (yes, that’s plural!) I pulled out this CoverGirl Lip Perfection Shade called Eternal.  I bought it awhile back and I never really wore it since.  Such a bummer because it’s such a gorgeous shade not too pink and not to red that’s perfect for the summer.  Better late than never I guess!

After prepping my face with primer, foundation, and all that I put the lipstick on to help me figure out what to do with the eyes.  I didn’t want to do my normal thick liner and mascara (too safe!) so I had to find shadow that was in the pink family with a soft but noticeable look.  Pulling out the drawer with all my palettes, I found one I bought at ULTA ages ago.  The colors were perfect but I knew that it needed some help in the pigment department.  So out came the  eyeshadow base and all was right with the world!

Type 4 Natural Hair

Hair:

If you follow me on Instagram, you saw that I went to the salon and got a much needed trim.  I didn’t have a lot of split ends thank goodness (I’m always paranoid about those!) but I did have a lot of fuzzy ends that needed to go.  After all, the last time my hair was professionally cut was over 2 years ago.  While I did lose a bit of length it doesn’t compare to what I gained.  My hair has shape and my curls have some serious definition, especially in the back!  I thought it was just the type of curls I had back there but it was just those dead ends holding them back.  After a good wash and deep condition, I can truly see the curls I’ve been working with.  I also got some highlights done.  They’re kind of hard to see because I chickened out and went super safe, opting for little bursts of light brown here and there.  As for any adverse affects of the color, the only thing I’m experiencing is increased dryness and frizz action up top.  My hair dresser warned me though so I’ll be sticking to a deep conditioning schedule and moisturizing my hair before bed.

What about you ladies?  Are you changing up your look for Fall?

Pinterest Makeup Inspiration: Dark Eyes and Pink Lipstick

Makeup Tips

Pinterest has to be one of my favorite places to get inspired.  Whenever I’m stuck in a fashion rut or need ideas for blog posts, I go to my boards or just pin away until my creativity kicks back in.  While I was pinning from my phone one night (the Android app is genius!) I got an idea.  I could  take the looks I’ve pinned to my Makeup Inspiration Board and try to do them myself.  Not only do a get to challenge my PJ brain, I get to breathe new life into my Beauty posts.

One trend I noticed a lot on my makeup board was dark eye looks and soft lipstick colors.  I rarely go the dark shadow route and when I do I usually fall back on the same look.  So I took one of my favorite pins and got to work on making it my own.  I was little skeptical at first (OMG, this look calls for liner on the lower lash line!  I can never get it right!) but I hung in there and took my time.

The end result – I’m very pleased!  It’s a whole different look for me and ya’ll my lower liner does not look crazy! #Winning

Makeup Ideas

Face:

  • My DIY Tinted Moisturizer : Mix in a few drops of my liquid foundation into my daily moisturizer from Neutrogena
  • Revlon PhotoReady Concealer in under my eyes
  • CoverGirl concealer on my lids and brow bone to lighten them up
  • CoverGirl press powder

 Eyes:

  • I went to my TooFaced Smokey Eye Palette for this one, using the colors from their Classic Smoke look.
  • With a pencil brush I applied Silver in the inner creases for a little brightness before layering on the dark shadow
  • I filled in the rest of my lid with ScandalEyes eyeshadow stick* in BlackMail.  I used my finger to blend the across the lid
  • I went over my lid with Black Suede for more depth of color
  • To keep my brow bone nice and neutral I swept Nude from Smashbox Shades of Fame Palette* and pressed in a little bit of Bliss under the arch of my eyebrow for a little brightness.
  • Now here comes the liner!  Using Rimmel London’s Waterproof Gel Eyeliner* I lined my upper and lower lash lines all the way from the inner crease to the outer crease giving myself a little wing action.
  • With a pencil brush I went back to Black Suede and went over my lower lash line to take away some of the shine the liner was giving me
  • Finished off with two coats of ScandalEyes Show Off Mascara in black on my upper and lower lashes

Lips:

Avon Glazewear Lip Gloss* in Mauve Movement

Hair

My hair is still straight from blowing it out last Saturday (tutorial to come, I promise!)  I went from some side sweep action to imitate the picture, using a little bit of Soft and Beautiful’s Lite Moisturizer for shine.

Natural Hair

After taking pictures for this post, I pushed my hair back and threw on a headband to get it out of my face and I realized I liked my hair better this way.  It shows off the eyes much better.

Influenster Review: Sinful Colors SinfulShine Nail Polish

Black Nail Polish

SinfulShine in Dark Room
(Don’t laugh! I stink at painting my own nails!)

The second item I received in my Influenster Sun VoxBox was a bottle of Sinful Colors SinfulShine Nail Polish in Dark Room. Ya’ll know I’m not much of a nail polish person going as far as a pedicure so my toes are presentable, but I am familiar with their brand.  I’m actually wearing their burgundy apple on my toes right now.  Unlike the one I already own, this nail polish has what they call Gel Tech in their formula.  It promises to give rich color and five times more shine than a patent leather pump.  It delivers on its promise, even in the black shade I tried out.  You can see the shine in the first coat, the color so rich you almost don’t need a second coat.  The polish goes on easy and dries quickly.  While I’m not a black nail polish type of girl, I do see myself trying out one of the brighter shades in the 32 piece collection.

Have you tried this new collection from Sinful Colors?  What color is your favorite?
