Tomorrow officially kicks the holiday season. While we’re all looking forward to the eating, shopping, and festive decorations, it’s also a time to reflect on all the great things we have. One of the biggest lessons this year taught me was how to be thankful every day. This time last year was such an emotional roller coaster for me. I worried so much to the point I it was hard to sleep because I didn’t know what my life was going to be like. I was a brand new mom who couldn’t bring herself to think about going back to work. But how was the new life gonna work? Would I be able to do it? Could we afford it? Could I start the career I always wanted? I took the leap anyway and this year was crazy to say the least. But through it all I was grateful. From the smallest things like seeing my daughter’s smile every morning to getting through another month with all the bills paid, I thankful for it all. Everyday life was working itself out. Despite the challenges of running a business I can still smile because I got to spend another day doing what I love to do.
I’ve learned that we shouldn’t make the holidays the only time we show our gratitude for what we have in life. We need to take the time out to be thankful all year round. It makes those bad times easier to get through and keeps you on the positive side of life.
Here are three tips to help you show your gratitude for the things in your life everyday,
- Take time out at the end of your day and say what you’re thankful for. This can be in the form of a prayer or meditation, but taking just a few minutes every night before bed to reflect on the good things you have can bring your life into a better perspective. You may have had the worst day ever, but if you can find just one thing to be thankful for, it makes it so much easier to sleep it off and start the next day fresh.
- Saying thank you with a smile. This should be a no brainer but it’s easy to forget to do this when you’re zooming through your day. Whether I’m in the checkout lane at the grocery store or at home with my husband, I make it a point to say thank ou to anyone who does something helpful for me. Brightening up someone else’s day can do the same for you!
- Try not worry! While we think life will be so much easier if we can control it all the truth is, the universe has it covered! Things will work itself out one way or another. Whichever way it goes, you are guaranteed a valuable lesson that you can learn from. Besides, obsessing over what may or may not happen takes away from the present that you should be enjoying right now. Tomorrow isn’t promised and the fact you woke up this morning is already something to be thankful for, right?
For those of you celebrate, have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! In the mean time, I would love to hear what you’re thankful for!
