Happy Valentine’s Day: Ten Things I Learned about Love

I’ve never been too into the all the bells and whistles of Valentine’s Day.  I guess it’s because as I get older, I realize that it takes a whole lot more than jewelry and flowers to stay in love with someone.  I was talking to my best friend the other day and we’ve been through hook ups, break ups, screw ups, and everything in between when it came to boyfriends.  Through all of that, I learned a lot and the time that my husband and I have been together (8 years total including almost two years being married) I learned even more about love and what it all means.  So I thought it appropriate to share ten things that I’ve learned about love along the way.

Falling in love is easy, staying in love is where all the work comes in

You know it’s love when you see him/her at their worst, don’t like it, but love them anyway

You are going to disagree and you are going to mess up – it’s all part of growing together as people

Love isn’t about the ring on your hand.  It’s about the one who’s holding your hand when you need it the most.

Love is about respecting one another for who they are.

You have to love yourself before you can love anyone else –  if you don’t abide by your own standards, how can anyone else?

Everyone is wonderful for at least the first six months, it’s when they comfortable you see if they are really worth the love you have to give.

Your significant other is there to compliment your life, not the sole source of your own happiness

Love is patient and understanding.

Love hurts sometimes, but you can’t appreciate the great times without those bumps in the road along the way.  In the end, it will always bring you closer. :)
