You’ve Set Those Blogging Goals – So What’s your Plan?


It’s been a month since the New Year started and we are back in the routine of our daily lives since the holidays took over.  The high of setting blogging goals was awesome and I felt like I was going in a million different directions just trying to do all of the things I promised I would do while I was super motivated.  It’s almost February, real life has set in and I admit that I’m not as super-duper-OMG motivated as I was four weeks ago.   Normally by now I would go back to what I’ve been doing in my little comfort zone and let the year whiz by only doing a few of the things I wanted to do this year.

But this year is different because I have a plan.

Having a plan is important when setting any type of goal, blogging or otherwise.  It helps us see the bigger picture and gives us a roadmap to our success.  But it’s not just about having a plan.

You have to write it down.

Something about writing things down gives a sense of permanency and commitment.  Your idea isn’t just floating in your mind space.  It’s right there in black and white sitting on that paper in front you.  You can see it, you can touch it, and now it’s a reality for you.  But you’re still not done.

You have to write down the steps you need to take in order to make that goal.

It breaks down that big goal into little mini ones, making it more manageable so you don’t get overwhelmed.  I’ll show you what I mean.

Goal:  Get more visitors and comments to my blog

  1.  Comment on at least three blogs a day
  2. Find a new blog to read and comment on a week
  3. Set up a Tumblr and/or Pinterest account to link back to my blog
    1. Pin or post a photo that links back to my latest blog post once a day
    2. Email one blogger friend a month and offer to guest post

I did this for every goal I had for my blog this year and it’s allowed me to get more done in less time.  Instead of spinning my wheels trying to figure out what I should do, I a gave myself small tasks that can be done daily and weekly.  It helps to focus your energy on specific things instead of trying to do everything at once.  The more you do these small tasks, they become routine, and once you’re in  your groove you’ll reach your goal in no time!

    Sounds like a great plan. I have this sheet called the Social Media Rule of 5 (or something like that). It’s basically a chart that I check off to remind me to comment on 5 blogs a day (although I do more sometimes), follow 5 tweeters, update facebook, stumble 5 times and i forget the rest. You get the pic though. Even though I don’t follow it all the time, it does help me to focus when I feel overwhelmed.

    I think writing out the steps is a fantastic idea. My blog goals have shifted since now I have a full-time job so I can’t focus on it as much as I’d like. However, I did get to give it a little nip and tuck!
