Five Plus Size Fashion Tips from the Stylists at ABC Family

Being a member of the plus size club, I know personally how difficult it is to shop and find clothing that flatters what I want (and holds in what I need!)  Finding and learning about brands that cater to women like me is the first step, which is why I started a Plus Size Fashion Spotlight on my blog.  The second step is getting helpful tips and advice from the experts on how to shop, what to look for, and what pieces to invest in.  This is where my first team of experts comes in!  Laura Farris Schuffman and Saba Salehi are the stylists over at ABC Family, whose celebrity clientele include Mischa Barton, Billy Bob Thornton, Candace Cameron Bure, Kelly Rutherford, and Eminem.  Laura has been a featured stylist in Vogue while Saba has had positions in mags such as Beverly Hills Magazine and Los Angeles Weddings.  Here are their five tips that we plus size women should keep in mind before we go shopping!

Get the right undergarments. Start under your clothes. Have you ever wished you could find a way to hide your trouble areas from the bottom up? Purchasing the right bra, slip, minimizer or shapewear is a huge key to wardrobe success. These hidden tools help keep things in place and will make all of your clothes look and fit better. There are slew of options available at most department stores at all different price points.

Find a great tailor! This is important for everyone. There’s a reason the stars always look amazing. They have experts making tiny adjustments so the clothes fit their bodies perfectly. By taking in a jacket a few inches or letting out the waist on a pair of pants, you can make a huge difference. Take advantage of department stores free alterations or find someone in your neighborhood whom you trust. Simple alterations can be quick and inexpensive and you will see a major difference.

Invest in the right pieces. Always spend the most on good quality jeans and pants. This makes such a difference in both in the fit and the lifespan. Accessories and seasonal trends, such as tights and faux furs, are a great place to take advantage of the more inexpensive stores. It is so important to know where to spend your money when it comes to clothing!

Play with proportions. This keeps everything in relative balance. If you wear skinny jeans pair it with a loose tunic blouse that hits mid thigh. It takes some trial and error to figure out what cuts and styles look best on your body type, but once you figure that out it will be the foundation to finding all of your go-to outfits.

Follow trends wisely. Although many of us try to follow every single trend that enters the market, it is best to incorporate the trends that suite your body type the best. Lace leggings look cute on the runway but very few of us that can pull that look off. The key to looking good is finding the perfect balance between emphasizing your best features and incorporating your favorite fashions. This fall accessories are king and this is great for plus sized women. The right necklace, earrings or scarf can help play up your assets.
